Sufficient resources are available to allow for a night shift again tonight. Crews continued to construct direct and indirect line around the slopover and spot fires on Mill Fire. Yesterday’s burnout in Division L was sucessful and crews are mopping up and improving the lines. If direct line construction is not effective in controlling the fire that crossed the Division K/Y lines, there is the potential for the Mill Fire to grow by 2,000 acres before full containment is achieved.

Some Type I crews have arrived, assisting with containment efforts. There was a 3-5 acre slopover on the Mill Fire earlier today that is not yet contained and is well down into the drainage. Additionally, multiple spot fires are well established on the west side of the road coming south out of Deadman’s Flat. Air and ground resources will continue to work the slopover until the end of shift.

Several crews will be spiked out at Ascherman Ranch tonight in anticipation of a potential firing operation early tomorrow.

The fire was lightning caused and is located in a designated wilderness area and so a confinement strategy was selected to steer the fire toward natural barriers. The decision was made on June 23 to order a Type II Incident Management Team based on the rapid spread of the fire from a wind event, the potential for smoke dispersal into the Rincon, San Pedro and Tucson Valleys, as well as values at risk which now include a power transmission line and scattered ranch facilities in the general vicinity. A confinement strategy is still being utilized with suppression action being taken as needed.

Wed AM Update

We have updated all listed fires from information we gleaned last night. That info was sparse, as might be expected during this major fire bust (of historic proportions).

To access all active fires, click on “Archives_June 2008″ in the righthand sidebar. Scroll to the bottom and click “keep looking”. There are 15 postings per page, and 3 pages of active fires at present.

Orleans/Ukonom Complex Fires

Location: 3 mi SW Somes Bar, Salmon River area, Six Rivers NF, Humboldt Co., CA

Specific Location: Lat 41° 21´ 17″ Lon 123° 32´ 11″

Date of Origin: 06/21/08
Cause: Lightning

Situation as of 09/10/08 6:00 PM
Total Personnel: 279
Size: ~60,500 acres (it is impossible to determine because the Ukonom Fire has been split in two and then combined with the Bear Wallow and Panther Fires. A whole lot of number juggling has gone on with the Klamath NF fire reports.)

Percent Contained: 75% reported (despite the massive spending that has gone on, no gain in containment has been achieved for weeks)

Costs to Date: not reported, est. $30 million ???

Addition 500 acres incinerated yesterday. Fire progressed north of the Little North Fork of the Salmon River towards English Peak and the Uncles Fire of 2006. More deliberate backburning occurring today.

Three month old fire still expanding. Talk about your crappy fire suppression! There has never any attempt to suppress this fire. All actions taken over the last 3 months have been to expand it. Tremendous graft and drainage of taxpayer coffers into the hands of pirates and profiteers who destroy forests for a living.

Nearly 3 months of this fire and it is still killing forests, still uncontained, still expanding, still costing hundreds of thousands of dollars a day.

The fire continues to back and flank out of some larger runs that developed yesterday. Almost all of the fire activity is in timber fuels [aka forest] with occasional torching and group torching when flanking fire is capable of making uphill runs. The main fire activity is between Yellow Jacket Ridge and English Peak and between Ukonom Lake and Bridge Creek.

Nearly three months of this fire and it is still killing forest, still uncontained, still costing hundreds of thousands of dollars a day.

The Ukonom Fire is a travesty. Six Rivers NF Supervisor Tyrone Kelley is a stone cold forest killer.

Increased fire activity with torching short uphill runs, frequent rollout, and aggressive persistent backing. Fire activity for 6/24 included major acreage increases. Increased perimeter sizes resulted in less area effectively staffed due to overhead and crew shortages. Smoke contribution in the North Coast Air Basin was and will continue to be substantial. Plantation loss on 6/24 was significant, with more expected. Habitat loss for key fisheries and faunal species is expected. Concerns over the lack of available suppression overhead, and aircraft limit options for any aggressive suppression strategies. Associated support functions not filled have resulted in limiting the amount of support the district resources can handle. Continued inability to fill orders results in the fire’s potential to enter into residential areas, expected later this week.
