A new decision has been made by the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise to change the names and reporting of these fires in order to instigate the maximum amount of confusion and obfuscation. It’s not mere incompetence — it’s deliberate malfeasance. That’s just how they are. The following is cut-and-pasted direct from their reporting:

Whitehawk Mtn. Fire now formally reported with the Whitehawk Complex, due to the status of the other fire which is confine and contain, broke out each individually. Fire is contained but not controlled yet. Duty Officer will staff as needed beyond this point. Formally reported with the Whitehawk Complex, due to the status of the other fire which is confine and contain, broke out each individually. Fire is contained but not controlled yet. Duty Officer will staff as needed beyond this point. The Whitehawk Mountain fire was a full suppression fire which is now contained. The Casner fire is in confine and contain strategy and in monitor status. This is the final 209 for the Whitehawk Complex and will report the Casner fire individually. Casner Fire formally reported with the Whitehawk Complex. Due to the status of this fire alone as being a confine and contain strategy, will report this fire independantly as the other fire within the complex was a full suppression fire and is contained. The duty officer will determine when this fire will need resources and will be staffed by local personnel. Monitor status. All the fire costs are shown on Whitehawk Mountain at the moment; will try to have seperate numbers next week. [sic]

All without even bothering to spell check. It’s kind of amazing, really. The public functionary class is special.

Whitehawk Mountain saw some torching and moderate fire behavior on north end near the containment lines. Casner fire also saw some torching and burning of interior pockets. Used helicopters and ground resources to help reinforce lines and contain the fire behavior. Will continue to monitor fires and staff as needed.
