Dr. Davis,

The latest info I have is as follows:

Situation as of 06/12/08 8:00 PM
Total Personnel: 1,354
Size: 19,000 acres
Percent Contained: 10%

10 residences have been destroyed. More than 5,000 structures are still threatened. Evacuations of all residents in the communities of areas of Paradise, Butte Valley and Butte Creek Canyon.

Injuries: 4

I extracted this from the CalFire Info site here:

http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current

Their last report was 8:15 PM. My experience is that the CalFire site info is very reliable, though sparse.

I am sorry I don’t have better info to give you. The Humbolt Fire has been very explosive, growing 11,000 acres (17 sq miles) today. I’m not sure that anyone knows the status of much right now. We should know more in the morning.

My prayers are with you.

Western Institute for Study of the Environment

PS If you find any more info regarding the injuries or damages, please let me know, and I will post it. Thank you.

9:45 p.m.: Humboldt Fire doubled Thursday; homes destroyed, evacuations ordered

Chico Enterprise-Record [here]

The Humboldt Fire doubled in size today, burning into Paradise and down onto the Butte College campus.

An estimated 20 to 40 houses were destroyed as the fire grew to 19,000 acres by 8:15 p.m.

All the roads into Paradise were closed just before 5 p.m. Pentz Road was open for outgoing traffic from the town only, to accommodate the thousands of people ordered from their homes.

The evacuation order covered the whole town south of Pearson Road, from the Skyway to Pentz Road.

The fire had burned up Neal Road as far as Chaparral Drive, and roughly to the line of Wayland Road. The fire crossed Clark Road at several points, just before 6:30 p.m.

Road was closed all day, and the Skyway and Honey Run Road were opened for residents along those streets for short periods only. Durham-Pentz Road was closed about 6:45 p.m. when fire reached it.

The fire flared up in the afternoon on Doe Mill Ridge, force new evacuations there and a reallocation of firefighting resources. …

Three shelters have been set up for evacuees.

A Red Cross shelter was opened this afternoon at the Paradise Alliance Church, 6491 Clark Road. It joins shelters in Chico at the Neighborhood Church, 2801 Notre Dame Blvd., and one that opened this evening at Pleasant Valley High School, 1475 East Ave.

There is also a public assembly point at the Paradise Senior Center, 877 Nunneley Road in Paradise, for those who need transportation off the ridge.

Parents who cannot get into town and have children who are home alone, should call 872-6149 to arrange to get their children to a public assembly point.
