An evacuation site has been set up at Herriman High School at 11917 S. 6000 West. The site was originally established at Fort Herriman Middle School but had to be moved when the fire got too close.
Herriman City Mayor Josh Mills and Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon have signed a declaration of State of Emergency. Gov. Gary Herbert is also on site. Officials are asking residents in Salt Lake County to stay off their cell phones so emergency information can be transmitted. Residents are asked not to call 911, but to instead call Herriman City Hall at 801-446-5323.

All fire resources were outstanding in holding the fire to the south side of I-70 while also containing numerous spot fires north of the interstate. Tushar Mountain WFM was also instrumental in containing and suppressing a large spot fire in DIV H. Fire continues to flank to the west while surging with short runs north towards I-70. I-70 currently is open to east and west bound traffic however the potential for additional closures exist with reassessments ongoing. Power corridor that parallels the interstate remains threatened and power is off. Fire on eastern edge of southern flank is extremely active at this time and exhibiting extreme fire behavior. Multiple divisions continue to be staffed with necessary resources however the current focus is holding the fire spread to the south of I-70. Resources completed direct and indirect line construction in DIV A and D with the intention of slowing and checking fire spread towards private property to the west.
Great Basin IMT2 (Whalen) have arrived at the incident and will spend the afternoon shadowing current IMT. Great Basin IMT2 Ourada will transition with Great Basin IMT2 Whalen at 0600 hours on Tuesday the 21st of September, 2010.
Extremely dry fuels conditions, ERC’s hovering around historical highs and ongoing Red Flag Warnings are creating critical and even volatile fire behavior potential. Observed fire behavior: Fire was active through the night with group tree torching and short uphill runs. Extreme fire behavior with sustained wind driven crown fire through in conifer fuel types. Rapid rates of spread with flame lengths of over 200 feet and frequent 1/2 mile spotting ahead of fire head.
Resources will work in conjunction with aircraft to contain fire spread to the south of I-70. Protection of private property remains the focus with an emphasis being place upon firefighter and public safety. Direct and indirect line tactics will be utilized. Assessment of the situation is ongoing. Remaining divisions will be appropriately staffed with efforts being placed to holding existing lines and monitoring. All fire resources are informed and cognizant of the IMT2 transition occurring prior to tomorrow’s shift.

Flash Flooding Announcement:
New Harmony, Utah - Meteorologists have predicted the potential for flash floods in the area. Residents should be advised that The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), and the Burnt Area Emergency Response Team (BAER), have made assessments and set priorities in order to minimize risk to problem areas and structures. This includes natural areas and infrastructures. Mitigation measures will include water diversion by building sand bag barriers around affected areas. These areas are in the Dam, Comanche, Strait and Main Canyon drainages.
Residents of the Ash Creek drainage including the area around New Harmony may pick up sand bags at the triangle south of the cemetery in New Harmony. Crews will fill and stock-pile sand bags until midnight today and may continue later if the situation requires.
Julie Woods with New Harmony Valley Fire District will be the Incident Commander in these flood preparation work efforts.
Emergency notification of residents will be through reverse 911. Residents may report any personal emergencies to 911 as well.
Individuals are reminded not to enter or attempt to cross areas that are flooding. Fast moving water is dangerous and even vehicles should not be used in crossing. Stay on high ground until the flooding abates.

This Let It Burn fire blew up and burned private homes far from the ignition point on the Dixie NF. This is the second Let It Burn fire on the Dixie NF this summer that blew up and caused serious damages and costs (see Bridge Fire [here]).To date neither Bevan Killpack, Pine Valley District Ranger nor Rob MacWhorter Forest Supervisor for the Dixie NF have been formally charged with criminal negligence.

Post-Fire Vegetation Conditions on the National Forests

… offers an initial description of post-fire vegetative conditions using the Rapid Assessment of Vegetation Condition after Wildfire (RAVG) process. RAVG analysis looks at fires that burn more than 1,000 acres of forested National Forest System (NFS) lands, beginning with fires that occurred in 2007. These fires result in direct losses of vegetative cover and many of the benefits associated with forested ecosystems.
NFS lands experience thousands of wildfires every year, most of which are relatively small. The largest fires typically account for 90% of the total acreage burned. RAVG analysis provides a first approximation of areas that due to severity of the fire may require reforestation treatments. These reforestation treatments would re-establish forest cover and restore associated ecosystem services. This initial approximation could be followed by a site-specific diagnosis and development of a silvicultural prescription identifying reforestation needs.
Search for RAVG wildfire summaries using the Select Wildfires… “By Year…”, “By State…”, or “By National Forest/Grassland…” menus (does not allow multiple criteria selection) to produce lists of wildfires; or, you may select an individual wildfire using the “By Wildfire…” selection menu. You may also select a Forest Service Region on the map below to display a wildfire list for that region of the United States.

About W.I.S.E. Fire Tracking
Last Spring W.I.S.E. initiated this Fire Tracking site. We have been endeavoring to track the larger fires in the West. So far we have tracked over 170 fires, many still active.
The way W.I.S.E. Fire Tracking works is that each fire (that we choose to track) gets it’s own post. That post is updated periodically. We try to update on a daily basis while the fire is active, but some days the information is not available.
If a fire you are interested in is not on the main page (it only holds 15 posts), then there are a few ways you can find it. First, try typing the name of the fire in the search applet in the upper righthand sidebar. Second, you can click on the “state” category if you know what state the fire is in. Third, if you know what month the fire started, you can look in the archives under that month.
For each fire we are attempting to post daily stats for acreage, personnel, percent containment, and suppression costs to date. That way each post becomes a historical record for that fire. You can see how the fire grew day by day, along with the changes in the other stats.
W.I.S.E. Fire Tracking is in blog form, designed for feedback. People on the scene, or anywhere else for that matter, can contribute information, photos, or ask questions.
